Kiwi call count monitoring has finished at Tāwharanui Regional Park for another year. Thank you to those who braved the cold and were so co-operative when filling gaps in the roster at the last minute. Each session is a bit of a juggling act but people’s happy faces when they come in at the end of their two hours to discuss what they’ve seen and heard, make it all worthwhile.

We report an increase in numbers again — it’s no wonder kiwi are heading out of Tāwharanui Regional Park to find quieter territory. While this is not an exact science by any means, as not all kiwi call each night, it does give an indication of increases. For those interested in statistics, we’ve been looking for an average count of five calls per hour over the six sites. That has been surpassed, showing that kiwi are plentiful at Tāwharanui.
Thank you to Roger Williams for spending many hours collating all the data from the four nights of
monitoring.
